Sunderland’s fourth consecutive league draw last weekend resulted in them being overtaken by Leeds United for the top spot in the Championship table. However, they aim to reclaim the lead when they host sixth-placed West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday. The Black Cats, who are level on points with Leeds but are second due to goal difference, are also aware of Sheffield United, also on 32 points, and Burnley, two points behind. Both of these teams are also vying for the top position as they head into their respective games against Oxford United and Coventry City. To return to the top, Sunderland must defeat a Baggies team that is currently on an eight-game unbeaten streak. With the majority of these matches ending in draws (one win, seven draws), the West Midlands club will be keen to secure a victory. Sunderland has won their last three league games against West Brom, a notable improvement given they had only won one of their previous 16 encounters against the Baggies (five draws, ten losses). West Bromwich Albion has secured one win in their last six league visits to Sunderland (three draws, two losses), with that victory being a 2-1 result in December 2022. Sunderland remains undefeated in each of their first seven home league games this season (five wins, two draws). This marks their longest such run in the top two tiers since the 2010-11 Premier League season, when they were unbeaten in their first nine home matches. In 2024, West Brom has recorded more away Championship draws than any other side, with eight. This includes three of their last four such games, alongside one win. West Brom has failed to score in their last three midweek league games (played on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday), with the most recent two ending in draws following one loss. Despite this, they have maintained a clean sheet in ten of their preceding twelve midweek fixtures.
