Over £9 million in Levelling Up funds, previously designated for a local council, is currently in jeopardy following the government’s statement that it is “minded to” retract the allocation. These funds were specifically allocated to Ashfield District Council, intended for various improvement projects within Hucknall, Nottinghamshire. John Wilmott, an independent ward councillor representing Hucknall, expressed that he is “absolutely furious” regarding the announcement, issued on Wednesday, and affirmed his intention to be “robustly challenging” the proposed withdrawal. Michelle Welsh, the Labour Member of Parliament for the constituency, emphasized that the funding has not yet been withdrawn but has instead been opened for consultation. She also stated that the current government received “a terrible inheritance” from its predecessor. The precise sum of £9,281,283 was initially announced during the Spring Budget in March by the preceding Conservative government. On Wednesday, the present government indicated that “given the need to make savings,” it was considering withdrawing funds from Levelling Up Culture Projects and Capital Regeneration Projects, a category that encompasses the funding intended for Hucknall. However, it also stated that consultations would be held with the affected locations prior to making a definitive decision. Councillor Wilmott remarked that councillors, local officials, and residents had “worked tirelessly for years” to secure funding aimed at improving the area, asserting that “Hucknall deserves better.” He stated, “We will be urgently seeking an audience with the minister over this devastating and short-sighted decision.” “We have been desperately trying to meet with the minister in recent months to no avail, being completely stonewalled,” he added. He further declared, “We will be robustly challenging the government’s proposal to take this funding out of Hucknall, which has already been left behind.” Welsh affirmed her commitment to “continue fighting for the best opportunities for Hucknall and will advocate for the town throughout the process.” She also commented: “This Labour government has been handed a terrible inheritance after 14 years of chaos and financial mismanagement by the Conservatives, and the last government made a lot of promises to people but with no funding set aside to deliver them.” Post navigation Gloucester Leader Advocates for City’s Independent Council Amidst Merger Proposals Chancellor’s Budget Exceeds Expectations on Tax and Borrowing Increases
