County councillors are scheduled to discuss proposals for a Surrey infant school’s expansion, which aims to more than double its student capacity, in the context of objections from local residents. Surrey County Council (SCC), the applicant, states that the initiative for Meadowcroft Community Infant School in Chertsey is intended to address the increasing need for primary school admissions. Currently, the school accommodates one class per year for students aged four to seven; however, the proposed development would broaden its provision by four years to include children up to 11 years old, thereby raising its capacity from 90 to 210 students. The project, despite being recommended for approval, has been labeled an “over development” of the premises by its detractors. Among 25 letters of objection, certain residents contended that the project was unnecessary, suggesting that students could instead be accommodated in other primary schools within the area. Concerns regarding traffic and parking were also prominent among those opposing the plan, even though the SCC Highway Authority did not register any objections. Conversely, only two letters were submitted in favor of the application, which highlighted the importance of children receiving uninterrupted education at a quality school locally. The proposed plans encompass an extension to the rear of the main school building, designed to incorporate a hall area and a new facility for pupils requiring special educational support. Furthermore, the development incorporates a new multi-use games area, and Meadowcroft has reached an agreement with the adjacent Salesian School to utilize its sports amenities during school hours. While acknowledging a decrease in the open space surrounding the school premises, planning officers concluded that the advantages of the expansion “outweighed” any drawbacks. Councillors are scheduled to render their decision on this project during an SCC planning meeting set for Wednesday.
