A warning has been issued to pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists regarding increased caution at level crossings, following multiple “near misses” on Merseyrail lines and numerous reports of individuals trespassing. Network Rail reported 27 instances of “misuse” on the West Kirkby line since November 2023, resulting in one fatality. The organization also noted that in August, a train operator was forced to engage the emergency brake when a lorry proceeded across the Bertram Drive crossing directly in front of the train. According to British Transport Police, disregarding warnings concerning railway trespassing carries the risk of “tragic and life-changing consequences.” Examples of level crossing misuse encompass gates being unsecured, telephone handsets at the crossing being left off their receivers, and cyclists, pedestrians, or vehicles traversing the tracks as a train approaches. Samantha Richardson of Network Rail North West stated: “These near misses at the crossings on the Wirral shouldn’t be happening.” She added: “What we’ve found is people aren’t dismounting off their bikes and there’s a herd mentality habit with people who are in rambling groups and running clubs.” Richardson further commented: “People often think they can gauge how long it will take before the train arrives at the crossing. We are asking people to stop, look and listen.” Network Rail indicated that the extent of the disruptions had resulted in grievances regarding missed job interviews and hospital appointments. A spokesperson for British Transport Police remarked: “Unfortunately we have seen too many times the tragic and life changing consequences of people ignoring the warnings about trespassing on the railway, and sadly need to remind the public how to appropriately use railway crossings.” Audiences can access the top content from BBC Radio Merseyside via Sounds, and connect with BBC Merseyside on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
