A team of students from Westwood Academy in Coventry has chosen the name “Chippy Chips” for their moon buggy design, despite it being an unconventional choice for such a project. This name, inspired by a universally popular British staple, will represent the UK in a Nasa competition. The American space agency’s Human Exploration Rover Challenge is set to feature designs from 75 other schools, colleges, and universities from across the globe. The West Midlands students, officially known as the Chippy Chips Space Program, have been allocated a year to construct a successful vehicle. Their efforts will culminate next April when they are scheduled to attend Nasa’s Marshall Space Flight Centre in Alabama to present their creation to scientists. James Suther, a teacher passionate about science, leads the school’s space, rocket and robot club. He will be coaching a team that includes students Nathan and Gargi, with the hope that this experience will cultivate teamwork and highlight the importance of science. Mr Suther stated, “You get to have a lot of fun.” He added, “The students have to build it from the ground up.” He further expressed, “I am hooked on space. That passion has always been with me and I wanted to share it with students.” Regarding the team’s distinctive name, the two youngsters clarified that it was chosen because it is “stereotypically British.” Additionally, it aligns with an internet trend initiated by Chelsea and England star Cole Palmer, who famously identified it as his favourite food. When asked about his involvement, Nathan commented, “It just seemed like a really good opportunity to do a couple of things, mostly to make other people proud like your family but also because it’s a great opportunity in general.” Gargi further remarked, “It’s a great opportunity to have some fun and get involved in different activities apart from just studying.”
