Paul Heckingbottom, manager of Preston North End, has stated that criticism from supporters regarding the club’s operational approach will not influence his decisions concerning playing affairs. This comes as the club recorded Championship finishes of 13th, 12th, and 10th in the three seasons preceding Heckingbottom’s appointment in August. An open letter, collaboratively authored by PNE Online and the Preston Supporters Collective Steering Group, asserted that “immediate reform” is necessary. The letter further noted that a recent description by a Championship podcast, which called the club “the most boring club in the EFL,” was “hard to dispute.” In reply, North End chairman Craig Hemmings indicated his willingness to meet with the authors of the open letter to address their concerns, an invitation that has subsequently been accepted. When questioned about his primary areas of focus, Heckingbottom informed BBC Radio Lancashire: “The football pitch, the transfer window so we can make changes. Anything else is not my remit.” He continued, stating: “I don’t think the narrative has changed since before I came in. There’s been negativity on the pitch and off the pitch.” He added, “But it won’t change what I think we need. I’m sure if there’s a need for me to see that [the letter], I will, but it doesn’t change my feelings about what we need to do.” The Lilywhites currently occupy 19th position in the Championship standings, sitting two points above the relegation zone. In the three seasons preceding the 2024-25 campaign, they concluded in mid-table, specifically 13th, 12th, and 10th. In fact, across all nine campaigns since their return to the second tier in 2015, their final league positions have ranged from seventh to 14th, indicating a consistent avoidance of relegation threats but also a struggle to consistently contend for a top-six spot. Heckingbottom, who previously managed Barnsley and Sheffield United, assumed leadership shortly after the commencement of the current season. This appointment followed the club’s decision to dismiss former manager Ryan Lowe after only one match of the new campaign. The open letter from supporters additionally highlighted that several squad members’ contracts are due to expire at the conclusion of this season and contended that the club’s transfer strategy “urgently needed an overhaul.” However, Heckingbottom expressed satisfaction with his current situation. He further elaborated: “For me, it’s an opportunity – I’d 100% rather have that coming in, having not affected the squad, than have everyone under contract, meaning you can’t alter anything.” “The money is not going to change in terms of what we’ve got so from my point of view it’s a big plus. It allows you to manage and manoeuvre things a lot more,” he concluded.
