The family of Florrie Bark reported being “overwhelmed with support” following their attendance at the Pride of Britain Awards last week. Florrie Bark, an eight-year-old from Corby, Northamptonshire, was honored with the Child of Courage award for her struggle against acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive cancer type. Subsequently, the family established Be More Fab, a charitable organization dedicated to collecting funds for other children battling cancer and providing financial support for educators to teach children in their residences. Andy Bark, Florrie’s father, stated that the charity, which commenced operations earlier this year, “couldn’t have hoped for anything more” than the visibility gained from Florrie’s participation in the awards ceremony. Mr. Bark mentioned that Be More Fab had initially aimed to secure £50,000 during its inaugural year, but has now accumulated £120,000 in a span of three months. “For a charity still in its infancy like we are, it’s just incredible,” he commented. Mr. Bark further noted that this achievement necessitated expediting the charity’s initiatives to “capitalise” on its current impetus and “support all the children we want to work with.” When discussing her aspirations for Be More Fab’s future, Florrie expressed: “I never had a full year of school… I never really learned that much new. I wish we had that sort of thing [education support] when I was poorly. I don’t want other children to be how it was for me.” Florrie received an AML diagnosis at age five and underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Nevertheless, subsequent complications resulted in lung damage, and she is currently awaiting a lung transplant procedure at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. Stacey Bark, her mother, shared that the family had endured “some really horrible discussions” but commended her daughter for “continuing to fight,” stating, “we’re proud of her, we really are.” Florrie described her attendance at last week’s Pride of Britain awards as “really fun.” She remarked: “I loved meeting everyone, it was especially fun meeting all the other kids… I loved it.”
