Alistair Bruce-Ball of BBC Radio 5 Live and former Premier League striker Chris Sutton conveyed their confusion and astonishment regarding Tyrone Mings’ actions during Wednesday’s match against Club Brugge. The defender was penalised for handling Emiliano Martinez’s goal kick inside the box, which resulted in a conceded penalty. On BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast, Bruce-Ball remarked, “I really don’t know what Mings was thinking.” He further described the incident as “an utterly bizarre thing to do and in the end it lost them a game.” Sutton echoed this sentiment, stating, “I don’t know what he was thinking either!” He explained that “The referee has no choice in that situation because he scooped the ball up with his hand.” Sutton also critiqued Aston Villa’s overall performance, asserting, “Villa got what they deserved because the performance level wasn’t there. They looked a tired and jaded team that did not click in the final third.” He added, “Had it not have been for Martinez then the scoreline could have been greater.” Sutton concluded by highlighting the need for improvement, noting that despite a good start to the season, Aston Villa’s performance levels have been inconsistent against Crystal Palace, Tottenham, and now Club Brugge. This situation, he suggested, presents a concern for Unai Emery and the club.
