Councillors have given their in-principle approval for a rugby club’s proposal to rename the street adjacent to its stadium in honor of a former player. Hull KR submitted a request to Hull City Council to alter the name of Poorhouse Lane to Phil Lowe Way, commemorating the player who passed away in March. The East Area Committee of the council formally endorsed the name alteration in principle during a meeting held on Tuesday. A mandatory consultation process regarding the proposed name change is scheduled to commence. The proposition for the name change was initially revealed by Hull KR chairman Paul Sewell during an address at the club’s awards ceremony in September, receiving positive feedback from Lowe’s son, Andy Lowe, via social media. Craven Park, the club’s stadium, is situated on Poorhouse Lane; however, the club stated that the current road name “does little to reflect the character of the area or the aspirations of the club to invest and enhance the area”. Lowe, a native of Hull, was a second-row forward who represented the club from 1967 to 1983, excluding a two-year period in Australia with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles between 1974 and 1976, during which he secured the New South Wales premiership with the Sydney-based team.
