A businessman has been prohibited from operating companies for a decade due to the employment of undocumented workers. Edris Ali engaged two individuals without legal work status at the Tasty pizza restaurant in Hartlepool and an additional four at Bubbles Car Valeting in Guisborough. These workers were identified during inspections conducted by Immigration Enforcement in 2020 and 2022. Dave Magrath, representing the Insolvency Agency, stated that Ali “failed in his statutory duties by employing these six people who did not have the right to work in the UK.” He further commented that “Employers hiring illegal workers defrauds the public purse and puts potentially vulnerable people at risk of exploitation.” In January 2020, an Immigration Enforcement visit to the restaurant revealed two Iranian men, both in their 30s, working without authorization. Subsequently, in October 2022, an inspection at the hand car wash identified four men in their 20s, originating from Iran, Sudan, and Ivory Coast, who were employed at the location. Ali, aged 39, residing on Lorne Street in Middlesbrough, served as a director for both companies starting in 2019, before resigning from these roles in 2022. Following these discoveries, Hama Tasty Ltd incurred a fine of £20,000, and Bubbles Car Valeting received a £60,000 penalty for the immigration violations. Last month, the High Court in London issued a disqualification order against Ali, with the 10-year prohibition becoming effective on Tuesday. This ban prohibits him from participating in the promotion, formation, or management of any company unless authorized by the court. Additionally, he was mandated to pay £9,884 in legal costs. Theresa Gregory from the Home Office commented: “Employers have a responsibility to carry out thorough checks on individuals prior to employment to ensure they have the right to work in the UK. “A failure to do so may lead to further action being taken by the regulator.” Details about BBC Tees’ presence are available on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
