Despite two recent defeats that have somewhat diminished holiday cheer, Swansea City will occupy a position in the top half of the Championship table by Christmas. Nevertheless, achieving 12th place after 22 games, if offered before the 2024-25 season commenced, would have been considered a satisfactory outcome for Swansea. The previous season, by contrast, proved challenging, and the summer transfer window focused on acquiring promising but unrefined talent rather than established stars. The current playing squad is still under development, necessitating further transfer activity when the market reopens next month. Despite these factors, tangible progress has been observed this season, with Swansea appearing a more robust Championship side than at any stage during the difficult 2023-24 campaign. Luke Williams’ squad, while facing challenges, has consistently demonstrated competitiveness. Consequently, Saturday’s exceptionally poor performance against Hull City was unexpected. Swansea was still recovering from the previous weekend’s disheartening loss to Sunderland, a match in which they initially held a 2-0 lead but ultimately secured no points following a second-half collapse. Following the Sunderland defeat, head coach Williams openly questioned his players’ mentality, stating their performance “stank of doubt.” It was presumed that Williams anticipated his players would deliver a strong response against Hull, a team positioned at the bottom of the table and without a win in 13 games prior to Swansea’s visit to Humberside. Contrary to expectations, Swansea instead produced their poorest performance of the season. The team exhibited a noticeable absence of energy, urgency, and quality, with even their most reliable players failing to meet their customary standards. The outcome was a well-earned victory for the Tigers, followed by another post-match interview where Williams expressed clear frustration. This leads to two consecutive home matches: against a significantly improved Queens Park Rangers on 26 December, and Luton Town three days subsequent. While both encounters are potentially winnable, Swansea cannot anticipate success in either if their performance mirrors that seen against Hull.
