Recently published images illustrate the planned transformation of a West Yorkshire town centre through a £64 million initiative. This undertaking, known as Calderdale Council’s A629 Phase 2 Halifax town centre project, aims to establish safer pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, alongside the development of new public spaces. The financial backing for this project is provided by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund. According to the council, progress on the project is satisfactory, with an anticipated completion date of summer 2028. Councillor Sarah Courtney stated that the newly released images demonstrate the advancement of the work, which is intended to “benefit people living, working or visiting Halifax”. Councillor Courtney further commented, “Millions of pounds of investment as part of the A629 Phase 2 Halifax town centre project is completely transforming travel in and around Halifax town centre.” She added that “Landscaping will improve the look and feel of key spaces, while upgrades to junctions will make travel more efficient and support improved public transport connectivity and cycle infrastructure.” The initial phase of the work is concentrated on the western part of the town. This involves ongoing construction at Bull Green, Northgate, Broad Street, and Skircoat Road, facilitating enhancements such as new pedestrian amenities and dedicated cycle lanes. The council indicated that the undertaking would also bring about improvements for motorists, with the implementation of new efficient road layouts and upgraded traffic signals designed to maintain traffic flow during peak times. Additionally, efforts have commenced to enhance the route for individuals commuting from Halifax Bus Station and the northern areas of the town towards the town centre. Both the council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority expressed their understanding of the inconvenience resulting from the construction and extended gratitude to the public for their patience. To facilitate access on the western side of the town during the ongoing work at Bull Green, the council has arranged for a complimentary shuttle bus service to operate within various areas of the town.
