Transport for London (TfL) has announced the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at an additional 15 bus shelters across London. This initiative aims to bolster passenger safety, particularly for women and girls, enabling them to “travel with confidence 24 hours a day.” The technology will undergo a 12-month trial period at selected locations, including areas with high footfall, quiet zones, identified high-crime spots, and places where individuals have reported feeling unsafe. TfL stated that the Metropolitan Police will have access to live footage from these cameras, which will assist officers in crime prevention and detection. These cameras, which are integrated into the shelters themselves, will store recordings for 31 days to support police investigations. An initial trial of the cameras was conducted at five bus shelters in the capital in March, following the introduction of night patrol officers to reassure passengers on the network. The cameras are now scheduled for installation at bus stops in Brent, Croydon, Hackney, Hammersmith & Fulham, Hillingdon, Lambeth, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, and Westminster. TfL confirmed that this technological deployment is part of the mayor of London’s commitment to improving safety for women and girls. Siwan Hayward, TfL’s director of security, policing and enforcement, described it as “one of many measures” being implemented. She added, “We want women and girls to be safe and feel safe, and for the TfL network to be a beacon of safety for everyone, day and night.” Michael Roberts, chief executive officer of London TravelWatch, indicated that the group’s research revealed many women and girls felt unsafe while waiting for buses. Ms Roberts further stated, “This important and valuable trial will not only help detect crime, but will also ensure that women and girls can feel safer and more confident when travelling by bus.” Post navigation Coroner Determines Electrical Origin for Fatal House Fire Involving Father and Son Two Pedestrians Seriously Injured Following Car Collision in Birmingham
