Following accounts of criminal damage in the Isle of Man’s uplands, motorcyclists have received a strong recommendation to remain on specified roads and green lanes. The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (Defa) stated that “enduro-type” motorcycles were responsible for “substantial damage” to both protected and private land. According to upland ranger Anna Clarke-Smith, groups have been observed traversing extensive sections of open hill land, specifically mentioning recently restored peatland at Beinn-y-Phott. She further noted that these groups were also seen deviating from designated routes within the Central Hills, which is recognized as an area of special scientific interest. Defa reported that “increasing incidents of criminal damage,” such as cutting fences to unlawfully access certain areas, have been observed across the Manx Hills. The department indicated that this situation has raised concerns that some electric mountain bike riders are also “causing damage,” attributed to the challenges of maneuvering heavy bikes through stiles and gates. Although motorcyclists are permitted to utilize the island’s green lanes and greenway roads, a considerable number of these routes traverse regions vital for habitat and wildlife. The department described these reports, which additionally detailed damage at multiple plantations, as “concerning.” Riders have received a reminder to adhere to legal routes, observe boundaries, and utilize specified access points, with a warning that non-compliance with these regulations could lead to prosecution. Defa Minister Clare Barber commented that these incidents have resulted in “environmental harm and put the livelihoods of upland grazing tenants at risk.” She stated: “We must all respect the boundaries in place to protect the land, wildlife, and the safety of livestock, so I urge everyone to stay on designated routes and use the proper access points.” She further added that the department was “committed to enforcing the law and dealing with those who flout it.”
