In Devon, volunteers have organized efforts to collect toys, aiming to ensure that children do not lack gifts during the Christmas season. Wally Lake, who serves as the youth lead for Tavistock Rotary Club, indicated that multiple drop-off locations were established throughout the town, enabling individuals to contribute either new or previously owned toys. He explained that a team of volunteers dedicated approximately three weeks in November to gathering these donations for the Toy Recycling Project. Subsequently, the collected items were made available for selection by residents of Tavistock and its neighboring hamlets. Lake articulated the initiative’s core objective, stating, “The idea is to get children a toy so nobody goes without at Christmas.” He further expressed, “We all like to have a present at some stage and to think people could go without is heartbreaking.” The United Reformed Church, situated on Russell Street, has granted the project permission to utilize its premises through the conclusion of the current month. Mr. Lake mentioned that the project has been operational for three years, and the public was encouraged to visit and select toys for their children. Reflecting on previous efforts, he recalled, “The place was full to the brim with toys and books last year.” He added, “It is just a small thing we can do to help and we are relying on the generosity of the public rather than throw toys away.” Lake conveyed appreciation, stating, “We are grateful… and if anyone else wishes to get involved with the project we would be delighted to see them.” Mr. Lake also indicated that the team is already strategizing for next year’s operations, given that volunteers encountered challenges in storing the collected donations, which were “filling up everybody’s homes.” Inquiries about the project can be directed to ToyRecycleProject@outlook.com.
