President-elect Donald Trump has put forward Sean Duffy, a former congressman and Fox Business host, as his choice to head the Department of Transportation. Duffy, known for being a prominent supporter of Trump on cable news, represents the second Fox commentator selected for the upcoming cabinet. Should his confirmation proceed, he would oversee aviation, automotive, rail, transit, and other transportation policies within the department, which operates with an approximate annual budget of $110 billion (£86 billion). In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump declared, “Sean has been a tremendous and well-liked public servant,” further noting Duffy was “admired across the aisle.” Trump indicated that Duffy’s congressional background would be utilized “to maintain and rebuild our Nation’s Infrastructure, and fulfil our Mission of ushering in The Golden Age of Travel, focusing on Safety, Efficiency, and Innovation”. The president-elect also stated, “The husband of a wonderful woman, Rachel Campos-Duffy, a STAR on Fox News, and the father of nine incredible children, Sean knows how important it is for families to be able to travel safely, and with peace of mind.” Prior to his entry into public service, Duffy worked as a prosecutor and gained recognition as a reality television personality, featuring in programs such as The Real World: Boston and Road Rules: All Stars. He was elected in 2011 as a Republican representative for Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives, holding the position until 2019. Upon confirmation, he would replace Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who was appointed by President Joe Biden in 2021. The Department of Transportation employs almost 55,000 individuals and is responsible for spearheading national initiatives concerning safety, sustainability, and efficiency within the travel and transport sectors. The prospective secretary will inherit ongoing challenges related to aviation safety, notably the persistent issues at Boeing, as the manufacturer works to resolve various safety and quality concerns. Furthermore, the possibility of labor disputes exists, alongside potential disruption should Trump fulfill his campaign pledge to revoke the Biden administration’s recent regulations on vehicle emissions. Following his decisive election victory earlier this month, Trump has progressively announced his selections for senior roles within his administration, often appearing to prioritize close associates over individuals with direct policy expertise.
