The National Sports Centre on the Isle of Man will implement reduced weekend operating hours for its gym and spa amenities. Effective 4 January, these facilities will close three hours earlier than their previous schedule, with the gym closing at 17:00 GMT and the spa at 16:00 GMT. Daphne Caine, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, stated that this reduction constitutes an “operational” decision, prompted by a 75% decrease in visitor numbers during the affected hours. She also confirmed that customers received a month’s advance notification of the change and that full-time contracted employees would remain unaffected. Conversely, other amenities, including squash courts and the swimming pool, will continue to operate until 20:00. Ms. Caine informed the House of Keys that “even with the changes,” the gym would still be accessible for 86 hours weekly, and the spa facilities for 67 hours weekly, across 361 days annually. This adjustment stems from an ongoing operational review conducted by the NSC’s management, which identified “considerably lower usage” of both the gym and spa on Saturday and Sunday evenings. However, Jason Moorhouse MHK described the timing of this change in January as a “strange” decision, noting that this period typically sees “most people” enrolling in such facilities. Lawrie Hooper MHK inquired if strategies to encourage facility usage had been explored instead of reducing hours, while Julie Edge MHK questioned if the measure was intended for cost savings. Ms. Caine responded that there could be a “very small saving” related to staff expenses and energy consumption. She further added that while initiatives to attract more patrons would be “welcomed,” the facility had modified its hours to align with actual footfall.
