Councillors have endorsed a reduction in the speed limit on a major road in Lincolnshire. The planning and regulation committee of Lincolnshire County Council determined that the limit should be lowered from 60mph (96km/h) to 50mph (80km/h) along a segment of the A52 in Donington, near Spalding. Ward councillor Jane King reported at a meeting on Monday that there had been a series of minor accidents. She indicated that the parish council would have preferred the limit to be set at 40mph (64km/h), but she acknowledged that police considered 50mph “more realistic.” King informed the meeting that pedestrian traffic in the village had increased since a Co-op store opened. She stated, “We have got people with buggies and small kids, along with older people who have to wait until the road is completely clear, and sometimes it can take a while.” Councillor Tom Smith believed the limit should remain at 60mph, adding that enforcing the change would be difficult over the 984ft (300m) stretch, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. However, Councillor Charlotte Vernon described the 50mph limit as a “suitable compromise.”
