Munster’s interim head coach, Ian Costello, lauded centre Tom Farrell’s display following the team’s 22-19 victory over Ulster at Kingspan Stadium. Farrell, a summer acquisition from Connacht, was instrumental in the southern province’s win, scoring a hat-trick, which included the decisive try in the game’s final minute. During the match, Ulster’s prop Tom O’Toole received a red card in the 31st minute. Farrell has accumulated six tries in 10 appearances for Munster this season. Costello expressed strong praise for Farrell’s consistent contribution throughout the current season. “I can’t stress enough how good Tom has been for us this season, he’s played so many minutes,” Costello stated. He also mentioned a lighthearted observation: “We were joking that he’s played his quota from last season and we’re not even halfway through yet.” Costello concluded by highlighting the recent match as Farrell’s peak performance: “He’s been brilliant on and off the pitch, but tonight was definitely his best on-pitch performance.” This win propelled Costello’s squad from 11th to fifth place in the United Rugby Championship [URC] standings. The 31-year-old has participated in all but 13 minutes of Munster’s season to date. Despite a potential need for rest, Farrell is expected to play again against Leinster on 27 December. This is due to an injury sustained by his centre partner, Alex Nankivell, during the incident that led to O’Toole’s sending off. Costello elaborated on the situation: “He would have been looking for a rest soon, but Alex is going to get the next rest. His hamstring isn’t great after that clearout, so Tom will go another week and we’ll give him a few days off after Christmas then.” Munster hooker Niall Scannell also commented on Farrell’s exceptional form since joining Thomond Park, describing it as “unbelievable.” Scannell remarked, “Every time he touched the ball he was just a go-forward machine, but he’s a hugely popular addition to the squad.” He further added, “He’s been unbelievable and I think you can see [that] when he gets on the front foot, with his skill set and particularly his handling game, he’s just feeding fellas around him.”
