President-elect Donald Trump has affirmed via his social media platform his intention to utilize the US military for extensive deportations of undocumented individuals. This confirmation occurred on Monday when he responded with “TRUE!!!” to a conservative commentator’s assertion that Trump would invoke a national emergency and deploy military resources to spearhead “a mass deportation program”. During his campaign, Mr. Trump consistently committed to activating the National Guard to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal body responsible for conducting deportations. This recent statement from Trump emerges amidst increasing scrutiny regarding the practical implementation of his promise to enact the most extensive mass deportation in US history. He has frequently stated that these deportations would commence on his initial day in office, scheduled for 20 January 2025. Nevertheless, even if a US administration could legally proceed with such initiatives, officials would still confront significant logistical hurdles. For instance, specialists express skepticism that the 20,000 agents and support staff of ICE would suffice to locate and apprehend millions of undocumented migrants. A substantial financial expenditure would also be involved; however, Trump recently informed NBC News that this would not impede his administration’s endeavors. Trump’s communication appeared on his Truth Social platform early Monday, coinciding with his ongoing announcements of nominations for crucial positions within his administration. Mr. Trump has already selected several trusted associates for prominent positions overseeing immigration and deportation policies, notably Kristi Noem, nominated to head the Department of Homeland Security, and Tom Homan, the former ICE chief, whom Trump has designated his “border tsar”. To date, Trump’s campaign has provided limited specifics regarding the implementation of the plan. He has previously indicated his intention to declare a national emergency, which would grant him authority to deploy troops within the United States. Homan informed Fox News on Monday that he is scheduled to visit Trump’s Florida residence this week “to put the final touches on the plan”, which includes determining the specific involvement of the US Department of Defense (DOD). He stated, “Can DOD assist? Because DOD can take a lot off our plate,” adding that the rate of deportations will be contingent on the resources allocated to the agencies. On Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) initiated legal action against ICE, seeking additional information on the operational aspects of the deportation scheme. The organization intends to pursue further legal actions in an attempt to prevent the large-scale deportations. During the four-year tenure of the prior Trump administration, approximately 1.5 million individuals were deported, encompassing both border removals and those from within the US. The Biden administration, having deported around 1.1 million individuals by February 2024, appears poised to equal that figure, according to available statistics.
