A four-year-old boy has received a special commendation after alerting firefighters to a blaze in a neighbour’s kitchen. In September, Oliver was playing in the back garden of his home near Cannock, Staffordshire, when he detected the smell of smoke originating from an adjacent property. The youngster promptly informed his father, suggesting that assistance might be required. His father, Ryan, subsequently observed smoke emanating from the neighbor’s residence and contacted the fire service. As an acknowledgment of his actions, Oliver received a commendation from Chief Fire Officer Rob Barber and was also given a tour of the Cannock Community Fire Station. Three fire crews responded to the scene, discovering that a gas cooker and carpet tiles had ignited, though the flames had already extinguished prior to their arrival. No injuries were reported, and the crews proceeded to ventilate the house and cut off the gas and electrical connections to ensure the property’s safety. Mr Barber, said: “Thanks to Oliver’s keen sense of smell and his awareness of the dangers smoke often represents, he was able to quickly tell his dad about what was worrying him.” He commended Oliver’s “alertness and quick-thinking” and acknowledged his father for addressing his son’s worries seriously. “You don’t expect someone of Oliver’s age to know what to do or to make the connection necessarily that smoke means fire,” Ryan said. Ryan further mentioned that Oliver’s mother, Sarah, a nursery manager, had been very effective in educating him about safety. Regarding the station visit, Ryan remarked: “He was a bit overwhelmed with everyone there and all the vehicles.” He continued: “But once it had calmed down he really engaged and loved to learn about what firefighters do and how the equipment works.” Ryan concluded: “He’s usually such a shy boy, but we’re so proud that on the day of the fire, he persevered and got us to check on our neighbours.”
