Planning permission has been approved for the construction of a new skate park and the redevelopment of a play area. These modifications are slated for Guisborough’s King George V playing fields, located on Howlbeck Road. Ward councillor Bill Clarke commented that the changes would benefit an area “which has been in sad decline.” The submitted application detailed proposals for “wheeled play provision,” natural play features constructed from timber, and the installation of large steel lighting columns equipped with LED lamps. The project’s funding originates from £15m obtained by Redcar and Cleveland Council through government levelling up funds. This allocation is also designated for the revitalization of Guisborough town centre. Councillor Clarke stated that the playing fields “have been needing this much-needed injection of investment for many years.” He further added that the initiative “will benefit not only this area, which has been in sad decline, but residents’ leisure facilities and health.” Danielle Swainston, the council’s director of children and families, also commented: “I feel that this will improve the area for children and young people and therefore support these enhancements.” The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that the playing fields, which are also slated for landscaping improvements, currently feature a nearby council-operated leisure centre and swimming pool, a football club, and a bowls and tennis club. Additionally, the site will see an expansion in on-site parking, with 13 new spaces for cars, four designated for individuals with disabilities, and eight for bicycles. The council’s regulatory committee approved the application.
