A plan to demolish a garage in the west of the Isle of Man and replace it with seven homes has received approval from planners. Four three-bedroom terraced houses are slated for construction along Marine Parade, with the remaining three-bedroom residences to be situated between Stanley Road and Gibb Lane. The location, formerly known as the Empire Garage in Peel, ceased operations in 2022, and its associated structures, including the reception, offices, and showroom, have remained unused since. Sam Skelton, a member of the Planning Committee, stated that these kinds of developments are necessary for the island and urged for more proposals concerning brownfield sites to be put forward. The project also involves the realignment of Gibb Lane to create space for the properties and to provide additional parking, with two spaces designated for each residence. The garage is classified as a registered building because it is located within a conservation area. The planning officer who recommended the approval of the proposals indicated that the development would have a “positive” impact on the site’s character and was considered “innovative” in its design. The planning committee’s decision to agree to the proposals was unanimous.
