A local council member has reported that villagers are experiencing “frustration” upon learning that funds from housing developers, initially designated for enhancing a road, were instead allocated to active travel initiatives. Harworth Estates, the developer responsible for constructing 325 residences on the former North Gawber Colliery site in 2015, had committed to providing Barnsley Council with over £77,000 for upgrades to Swallow Hill Road in Mapplewell. Nevertheless, during a meeting held last week, Councillor Stephen Hunt inquired why the proposed project was no longer “on the table,” particularly given that the road’s state has worsened since the completion of the housing development. Councillor James Higginbottom, who serves as the Cabinet spokesperson for environment and highways, stated that the thoroughfare would be evaluated for enhancements within a 2025 maintenance schedule. According to a report from the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the council verified that the developer’s funds were indeed utilized for active travel initiatives instead. This occurred despite residents having previously voiced worries about Swallow Hill Road, which had been labeled “dangerous” during the planning phase due to increased traffic from the new homes. Active travel initiatives are designed to enhance transportation choices and safety for individuals who walk or cycle. Higginbottom further remarked: “In addition, we are prioritising investment in active travel schemes in the Darton East ward, which will enhance accessibility and promote sustainable travel for our residents.“We are committed to ensuring that our communities benefit from these improvements, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have.” Post navigation Anti-apartheid author Breyten Breytenbach dies at 85 Political Backing Secured for 1,000 Affordable Homes Initiative
