A long-standing neighbourhood custom, where residents vie to adorn their homes with the most “mesmerising” array of Christmas illuminations, has significantly grown in popularity over nearly 30 years. The festive light arrangements on Warwick Drive in Hazel Grove, Stockport, have become increasingly elaborate since Bryan McAndrew initiated decorating his residence in 1995. Mr. McAndrew, aged 79, stated that he and his deceased wife aimed to illuminate their community during the Christmas season, prompting nearby residents to join in. The illuminations on Warwick Drive now attract substantial holiday visitors, with resident Sonya Lyons commenting, “the children absolutely love it.” Sonya reported that approximately 100 households participate in these yearly exhibitions, collectively raising over £20,000 for St Ann’s Hospice, a local charity, through contributions from those who visit. “It’s now a Christmas tradition, so we can’t stop now,” she elaborated. She added, “It’s just magical, absolutely magical – the children are mesmerised.” St Ann’s Hospice was selected as the beneficiary in remembrance of Christian Boswell, a resident who passed away from cancer at 39 years old. Additionally, financial contributions have been directed to Space4Autism, another local charitable organization. Bryan recounted the origin of the tradition 29 years prior. “I just moved in before Christmas,” he informed BBC Radio Manchester. “And it was dull.” He continued, “So I said to my late wife ‘What about putting a few lights up’?” “The following year we put up more, and it then snowballed as others started to copy,” he concluded. Darren Ingam, a neighbour of Bryan, mentioned that his own display requires three days for installation, noting that the scope of the project “keeps escalating” annually. “I’ve got to plan where everything is going to go,” he stated. “But it’s well worth it – thousands of people come here on a Saturday evening.” He added, “You can hear the kids going ‘wow’!”
