Participants in a circus workshop designed for individuals over 50 years old report that the program helps them maintain an active lifestyle and counter feelings of loneliness. The Knowle West Health Park in Bristol collaborates with Circomedia to offer this class. Over an eight-week period, attendees acquire various circus skills, which they credit with assisting them in staying active. John, an 80-year-old participant, shared his experience, stating, “I was very apprehensive when I came here and this has brought me out of my shell.” Emma Smallwood, who hosts the sessions at the Knowle West Health Park, indicated that the primary objective of the class is well-being. Ms Smallwood further elaborated, “What we do in these circus classes particularly ticks a lot of well-being boxes.” She added, “They’re active and without realising, they feel like they’ve had quite a workout.” She also noted, “It’s good for combating isolation.” This initiative marks the first time Bristol’s circus school, Circomedia, has engaged with individuals over 50. Instructor Elly Clibbens typically teaches four-year-olds. Ms Clibbens commented on the experience, saying, “It’s nice working with adults who have a bit more patience and can really focus and get the tricks.” The workshops are scheduled to recommence in January.
