George Eastham, a former member of England’s squad that won the 1966 World Cup, has passed away at the age of 88. He was notably instrumental in reforming the British football transfer system. The Blackpool-born forward accumulated 19 international caps. Although he was included in manager Sir Alf Ramsey’s squad for the World Cup 58 years ago, he did not feature in any matches during England’s sole victory in the tournament’s history. Eastham was also an unused squad member during the 1962 World Cup. His first appearance for England occurred in an FA Centenary match against Brazil at Wembley in 1963, and his final cap came in a 2-0 friendly victory over Denmark, preceding the 1966 World Cup. Initially, only the 11 players who commenced the 1966 final against West Germany were presented with winners’ medals. However, after a concerted campaign, Eastham, along with other squad members and manager Ramsey, were awarded their medals in 2009. The Football Association conveyed its sorrow regarding Eastham’s death, stating it was “saddened” and that “our condolences go to George’s family and friends.” Eastham’s club career included spells at Newcastle United and Arsenal before he transferred to Stoke for £35,000 soon after the 1966 World Cup. He made 194 appearances for the Potters, notably scoring the decisive goal in their 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Wembley in the 1972 League Cup final. Furthermore, Eastham was a participant in a 1963 court case that significantly enhanced players’ ability to transfer between clubs, leading to a substantial overhaul of the British transfer market. For his contributions to football, he received an OBE in 1973. After retiring as a player in 1974, he subsequently served as Stoke’s manager from March 1977 until January 1978. Stoke City Football Club announced they were “immensely saddened by the passing of club legend” Eastham. The club confirmed its players would wear black armbands during their match at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday (12:30 GMT) and intends to honor Eastham at their home fixture against Leeds United on 26 December. The club further stated, “Our thoughts are with George’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
