Derby City Council has expressed disappointment following the announcement by national coach operator Megabus that it will cease services to the city. The company stated it is discontinuing 15 routes across England and Wales, effective 4 December, citing customer demand levels that it described as “simply too low”. Consequently, the East Midlands cities of Derby, Nottingham, and Leicester will no longer be part of its service network. Megabus confirmed it would contact customers impacted by these service alterations and that provisions were being made for those who had already purchased tickets to secure alternative transportation or obtain a refund. Following the implementation of these changes, only the subsequent routes will remain operational: Simone Walsh, the managing director, characterized this action as an “extremely difficult decision”. Megabus, which commenced operations in the UK in 2003, positioned itself as the “market-leading coach operator in England, Scotland and Wales”. Its network connected over 100 locations and, at its peak, transported more than four million customers annually. A spokesperson for Derby City Council stated: “We’re disappointed that Megabus have withdrawn their services from Derby, however there are plenty of other options for passengers wishing to travel by coach.” National Express will maintain its operations from Derby’s bus station. The council added: “We’ve been working hard to increase the transport choices available to those travelling around Derby and will continue to work with operators to explore additional services.” Megabus managing director Simone Walsh commented: “Unfortunately, it is not sustainable for us to continue operating our current network as the customer demand is simply too low. ” She continued: “So, we are making these changes to ensure that we have a more efficient network going forward.” Walsh also stated: “We want to thank the many passengers who travel with us every day and will ensure that we continue to operate an affordable and high-quality service on the parts of the network that are unaffected by these changes.”
