The Moss Park care home in Lochaber, which faced potential closure, is expected to be acquired by NHS Highland and Highland Council. Private operator HC-One had announced in September that its facility, located in Caol near Fort William, might close. The welfare of the home’s 40 residents became a subject of concern, brought up during First Ministers’ Questions in Holyrood the previous week. Both the health board and the local authority confirmed that efforts were underway to finalize the acquisition of Moss Park and to transfer its operational service to NHS Highland in the coming year. NHS Highland and Highland Council also expressed appreciation for the “positive support” provided by the Scottish government. On October 31, Highland Council reviewed a confidential report concerning the future of care provision in Lochaber and subsequently endorsed a recommendation to pursue the purchase of Moss Park. A statement indicated: “While this is still only a first step in the process, and there remain a number of complexities to work through, it is hopeful this proposed way forward provides some certainty to care home residents and their families and the care home staff.” The transfer of service provision from HC-One to NHS Highland is anticipated to occur early in 2025. NHS Highland intends to manage the home for the medium term, pending the establishment of alternative sustainable care models in Lochaber for the long term.
