A burglar was apprehended following DNA analysis that connected him to stolen tobacco he had consumed at the scene prior to his departure. Forensic examination identified a cigarette butt discovered outside a student accommodation, linking it to the perpetrator who had also taken bank cards and aftershave from within the property. Paul Harewood, aged 50, of Guildford, Surrey, admitted guilt to charges of burglary and fraud at Guildford Crown Court. Sergeant Sarah Wentworth of Surrey Police commented, “His own arrogance in lighting a cigarette at the scene sealed his fate”. Harewood committed the burglary at the student residence on June 5, while the occupants were sleeping. He subsequently utilized one of the pilfered cards at a McDonald’s and attempted to use another at a clothing retailer the subsequent day, though this transaction was unsuccessful. On Tuesday, he received a sentence at Guildford Crown Court of two years, four months, and 23 days in prison for burglary, along with an additional four months for fraud, to be served concurrently.
