Local authority leaders express their hope for “new life” to be breathed into a town centre, following the confirmation of £16m in government funding for two significant projects. The Grade II listed Watford town hall is slated for transformation, designated to house the town’s museum and a business hub. Additionally, the presently shuttered Watford Colosseum is set for restoration, intending to operate as an entertainment venue under the management of the private firm AEG Presents. Watford Borough Council stated: “These landmark projects are expected to increase visitors to Watford, generate new jobs, and provide a strong foundation for the town’s continued success.” Applications for this funding were initially presented to the prior government administration, and both have now received approval subsequent to an assessment of UK Levelling Up Fund projects. According to the proposals, the town hall complex is envisioned as an innovation hub, structured to offer adaptable space for businesses to commence or expand operations. A sum of £2.45m from The National Lottery Heritage Fund is earmarked for the establishment of the museum. The Watford Colosseum is scheduled to recommence operations in October 2025, following the conclusion of its refurbishment. Peter Taylor, Watford’s elected mayor and a Liberal Democrat, commented: “This funding will help us unlock economic growth, create new jobs, and deliver exciting new spaces for our community. It is a big vote of confidence in Watford’s future.” Matt Turmaine, the Labour MP representing Watford, remarked: “The investment will help deliver a vibrant community and business hub that will support both existing and new enterprises. It’s a real and significant step forward in strengthening Watford’s economic future.” For updates on news from Beds, Herts, and Bucks, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
