Sunderland captain Dan Neil has indicated he is beginning to demonstrate his true capabilities, acknowledging an initial slow period this season. His comments follow his 10th league goal for Sunderland, scored during the match at Swansea. On Saturday, the midfielder netted the equalizing goal, contributing to the Black Cats’ 3-2 victory over Swansea, a game in which they had initially trailed by two goals. Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Neil remarked, “All three of my performances this week have been a lot better – (I’m) trying to be on the front foot and take the game by the scruff of the neck.” He further added, “I know deep down I didn’t start the season well – footballers know when they are playing well and when they’re not but for me its about sticking to the processes and my routine. Eventually you rise up and start playing better and I think that’s starting to show now.” These remarks from the 23-year-old come amidst recent criticism from certain segments of the Sunderland fanbase. Neil explained that he required time to adapt to the system of new manager Regis Le Bris, particularly after being appointed team captain. He elaborated, “I’ve got a new role this year in terms of leadership and in the formation of the team so I started a little bit slow but I’m getting used to it every week.” Neil also expressed his aspirations for the current season, stating, “In recent years I’ve started seasons really fast and almost tailed off a bit so I’m hoping it’s the opposite this year and when we get to the business end I’m firing on all cylinders.” Sunderland currently holds the fourth position in the Championship standings and is scheduled to host Norwich City this Saturday.
