Runnymede Borough Council (RBC) is developing a plan to implement energy efficiency enhancements across 169 of its council-owned residences located in a Surrey district. These planned improvements encompass the installation of solar panels, along with external wall, cavity, and loft insulation. The council is committing £1.28 million to this initiative, supplemented by an additional £1.25 million secured through central government grants. An RBC spokesperson confirmed that “Letters will be sent to tenants very soon and the works are likely to start in December.” This initiative comes after a 10% increase in gas and electricity bills for numerous individuals in October. Council research indicates that tenants residing in these upgraded properties could achieve annual savings of up to £750. Mike Smith, who chairs the council’s housing committee, stated: “We’re doing all we can to ease the continuing cost of living pressures on local people. “It’s pleasing that as well as cutting bills, the work will also reduce the impact of our council-owned homes on the environment.” The council expressed its expectation that this project will contribute to lowering carbon emissions, addressing fuel poverty, and fostering green employment opportunities. A spokesperson clarified that all improvements financed by RBC would be covered by rent payments from tenants. Follow BBC Surrey on Facebook, on X.
