Kent County Council (KCC) is scheduled to conduct a debate this Thursday concerning the future of the Seashells Children and Families Centre in Sheerness. The local authority has stated its intention to close the service, citing the necessity of broader budget reductions to achieve financial equilibrium. Opponents of the proposed closure have described the centre as a “vital lifeline” for families residing in the vicinity. A petition advocating for the centre’s continued operation has garnered over 6,000 signatures, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Mike Whiting, an independent councillor representing the Isle of Sheppey, has urged the council to refrain from eliminating this “precious resource,” which he noted was utilized by 1,900 families during the previous year. He further stated that Seashells “means so much to many disadvantaged families. It is a vital lifeline for the current generation, as it was for the last.” While no definitive decision on Seashells’ future is anticipated during Thursday’s debate, the council meeting is expected to serve as a forum for hearing various viewpoints on the subject. KCC has asserted that closing Seashells, in conjunction with the Millmead Children’s Centre in Margate, would reduce its budget by approximately £425,000. The local authority also indicated a requirement to identify savings exceeding £100 million over the next few years. It also added that comparable services are accessible at other local venues.
