Legal proceedings have commenced for an individual charged with the murder of a woman. Paul Irwin, who resides on George Street in Whitehaven, has entered a plea of not guilty to the murder of 34-year-old Tiffany Render, an incident that occurred on March 22. The 50-year-old defendant also faces an accusation of sexually assaulting Miss Render on that identical date. At Carlisle Crown Court, a jury comprising ten women and two men has been formally sworn in for the proceedings, which are anticipated to extend over a fortnight. Addressing the jurors, trial judge Mrs Justice Foster stated: “It is very important, whatever your reaction, that you remain objective and dispassionate during this trial.“Cases are not decided on emotion. They are decided by a calm and measured assessment of the evidence.” Iain Simkin KC is scheduled to deliver the prosecution’s opening statement on Wednesday.
