An elderly participant has been forced to retire from a solo “world’s toughest row” across the Atlantic Ocean soon after commencing his journey. Vic Handley, a 70-year-old from Littleover, Derby, commenced the endeavor on Wednesday. However, organizers reported that “shortly after this morning’s race start, he encountered unexpected technical issues”. Mr. Handley’s objective was to become the third oldest individual to successfully complete the 3,000-mile rowing expedition, which spans from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean. According to The World’s Toughest Row organization, “Despite all equipment being thoroughly tested and approved beforehand, some challenges are simply beyond control.” The event’s organizers further stated: “Vic has now been towed safely back in by one of our support vessels and is now back on land.” They also expressed: “We would like to acknowledge Vic’s incredible effort and preparation leading up to the race. His determination and spirit embody the true essence of this challenge.” Mr. Handley commenced his journey alongside 38 other vessels participating in the challenge, among which only six were solo crafts. The former engineering director was navigating a boat christened The City of Derby.
