Leicester’s mayor has announced that a “serious proposal” is currently under consideration for the premises that previously housed a Marks and Spencer (M&S) store in the city. M&S had previously stated in May its “tough decision” to propose the closure of its Gallowtree Gate branch. The official closing date was made public in July, and the store ultimately closed its doors to customers in August. The property has remained unoccupied for over two months since its closure. However, Sir Peter Soulsby informed the BBC that the site has attracted “interest,” and the aforementioned proposal is “under discussion.” Leicester City Council further stated that no additional information regarding the proposal can be disclosed at present. Soulsby commented, “It’s only been just over 10 weeks since M&S closed, and I’m pleased to say there is interest in this prime city centre site, and a serious proposal under discussion.” He added, “We aren’t able to go into further detail at this stage, but will do so in due course.” Customers in Gallowtree Gate expressed that the closure of M&S had created a substantial void in the city’s core. Naomi Deeley, a 20-year-old resident of Leicester, stated, “I did shop in M&S but more for food and alcohol.” She continued, “I’m not sure what I’d like to see there, but it would be good to see something similar, then we’d have more options for shopping.” Nish Gurung, a 21-year-old student, commented, “I think it’s a problem for the city not having M&S there – I’d just like to see it open again.” Liza Deeping, 57, also from Leicester, expressed her view that the atmosphere of the city centre’s streets outside businesses is a significant concern for many establishments. She recalled, “I used to go there as a kid with my dad. The staff were lovely, it was quite sad when it shut.” Deeping added, “But with the way town is generally, I can understand it. I think a lot of people feel quite vulnerable.” At the time of the store’s closure in the summer, one customer, Margherita Stevens, was observed wearing a black hat and veil, signifying her mourning for the store’s departure. Upon the final closing of its doors, the staff assembled for a round of applause.
