A police force is projected to incur a £4.2 million National Insurance (NI) expenditure due to tax increases outlined in the Autumn Budget, according to a police and crime commissioner (PCC). John Campion, the Conservative PCC for West Mercia, asserted that the uncertainty stemming from Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s budget would necessitate increased taxpayer contributions to the force in the coming years. The chancellor implemented tax hikes totaling £40 billion on Wednesday, which included an elevation in NI contributions for employers effective from April. Chancellor Reeves stated that the budget aimed at “restoring stability to our public finances and rebuilding our public services.” In a statement issued after the parliamentary announcement, Mr. Campion expressed that it was “baffling” that the criminal justice system was not addressed in the Budget on Wednesday. He further commented, “I was looking to the announcement to give certainty on police funding as I focus on delivering my new police and crime plan and start to look at West Mercia Police’s budget for the next financial year.” Mr. Campion added, “There is no doubt that this uncertainty will mean higher council tax rises, paid by hard working people across West Mercia and more police officers taken from the front line keeping us safe.” Mr. Campion indicated that the NI increase would financially impact the police force. He urged the chancellor to “clearly set out how she proposes to fund the rise in employers’ National Insurance that will affect policing and make the investment in our courts service to reduce the backlogs.” During her speech on Wednesday, the chancellor affirmed that she had made “responsible choices to restore stability to our country, to protect working people.” Reeves also stated, “More teachers in our schools, more appointments in our NHS, more homes being built, fixing the foundations of our economy, investing in our future, delivering change, rebuilding Britain.”
