The local community in Surrey has completed the restoration of two Victorian-era fingerposts that had previously deteriorated. These signposts, originally crafted in Chertsey in 1900, are situated at the intersections of Spelthorne Lane and Littleton Road in Ashford Common, and Dockett Eddy Lane and Chertsey Road in Shepperton. Tracy Brown, the restoration leader from Sunbury, commented: “It’s especially fitting that they are ready in time for Christmas – a gift to our local community and a celebration of saving our shared history and heritage.” The group responsible for the project is now seeking to obtain listed status for all four historical signposts located within the Spelthorne borough. Various craftspeople and businesses within the borough collaborated, contributing their expertise to repair the signage. This included Bridge Marine, which produced the pointers; the local Men’s Shed, which created a topper for the Shepperton post; and the Littleton Common Residents Association, which handled the painting. Councillor Harry Boparai stated: “I’m delighted to see the work that has been done by our community and the fingerposts look fantastic, standing proudly once again.”
