An individual rescued his infant child from a car window, holding the baby above his head to ensure safety, after the vehicle became immersed in significant floodwaters during Storm Bert. Andre Randles, accompanied by his 11-month-old son Luca, was traveling to Todmorden, West Yorkshire, on Saturday. His journey was rerouted from the primary thoroughfare due to a road closure. According to Mr. Randles, an abrupt depression in Woodhouse Road prevented him from evading the floodwaters, which promptly infiltrated the vehicle. Mr. Randles stated: “As soon as I saw danger, saw the water coming into the car and we were no longer floating and starting to sink, something switched in me.” The 22-year-old, who lacks swimming ability, reported navigating through floodwaters that reached his chest. Mr. Randles commented: “I thought I needed to get out and get Luca out.” He further noted that shortly thereafter, the automobile was nearly entirely underwater. Mr. Randles, a resident of Hebden Bridge, recounted: “I was trying to get him somewhere safe as quickly as possible.” Inhabitants of an adjacent residence provided the marooned family with shelter to stay dry and warm as Mr. Randles contacted recovery assistance. His partner, Paige Newsome, remarked: “It could’ve been a completely different outcome.” She continued: “We could not be sitting here with both of them, so I’m very grateful to Andre.” Newsome added: “I’m very proud of him and of how fast-thinking he was.” Mr. Randles indicated that subsequent to this event, other individuals encountered comparable difficulties on the road, including one person who became stranded in the identical location later that Saturday. The family now expresses hope that preventative measures will be implemented to avert future occurrences. Numerous flood alerts were disseminated throughout Yorkshire following Storm Bert, which delivered snow and substantial precipitation to the area. On Saturday, flood sirens were activated in sections of Calderdale, where river elevations near Todmorden surpassed 2.4m (7.9ft), falling 34cm (1ft) below the levels recorded during the Boxing Day floods of 2015.
