Firefighters in California are continuing to combat a wildfire in the picturesque ocean-side community of Malibu. The blaze expanded significantly overnight, prompting thousands to evacuate, including numerous celebrity residents. By Tuesday evening, the fire had consumed over 4,000 acres, representing an increase of nearly 40% since the previous day, though crews were actively working to suppress it and had achieved approximately 7% containment. The incident, named the Franklin Fire, began late Monday night near Pepperdine University. It has destroyed several homes, but the university itself appeared to be out of danger as of Wednesday. Strong winds that had been fueling the fire started to diminish on Wednesday, according to weather officials, offering some relief to the more than 1,500 emergency personnel on site. Approximately 20,000 individuals remain under evacuation warnings or orders in the affluent southern California city, known for its celebrity population. Among those compelled to leave were celebrities Dick Van Dyke and Cher. Star Wars actor Mark Hamill stated on social media that he intended to stay at his residence despite the fire risk. Students at Pepperdine University, a private Christian institution situated along the Pacific Ocean coastline, were directed to shelter in place late Monday as flames from the fire neared campus buildings. Videos showed students inside the library as flames reached the perimeter of the campus. “There was a lot of anxiety going on, because everyone was shouting things, like, ‘It’s coming closer, we’re going to die,'” Charis Kai, 19, recounted to the New York Times. She mentioned that students, who had gathered to sing and pray during the incident, chose to avoid observing the windows due to apprehension. “When you see the fire coming closer, that’s what makes everything worse,” she told the newspaper. Michael Friel, a spokesperson for the university, confirmed that no injuries occurred and no significant damage was inflicted upon campus structures. Mr. Friel informed BBC News on Wednesday that the administration was “so impressed with the resilience” of the students, many of whom had been engaged in late-night study sessions for upcoming final exams or were awakened abruptly on Monday night and compelled to evacuate their dormitories. The origin of the fire has not yet been established by officials. As of Wednesday, businesses, educational institutions, and primary thoroughfares surrounding Malibu are still shut down because of the ongoing danger. Concurrently, the strong Santa Ana winds, which transport arid air from desert regions inland, have started to lessen and are predicted to decrease even more by Wednesday evening. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) stated that firefighters are actively striving to avert additional damage. “The deep and rugged terrain, along with the strong winds and low humidity, continue to pose challenges for firefighters,” the agency noted on Wednesday. Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Anthony Marrone reported in a Wednesday morning update that a minimum of seven structures, including residences, have been obliterated. An unspecified number of other buildings have sustained damage. He further stated that close to 20,000 individuals are subject to evacuation orders or warnings. Residences belonging to celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and Jay Z were reportedly situated within the evacuation area. Van Dyke confirmed in a Tuesday Facebook post that he was among the notable figures compelled to depart. The Mary Poppins actor, who will celebrate his 99th birthday on Friday, mentioned that he and his wife, Arlene, evacuated safely with their pets, with the exception of their cat, Bobo, who is still unaccounted for. “We’re praying he’ll be OK and that our community in Serra Retreat will survive these terrible fires,” he expressed on Facebook. Eyewitnesses informed KABC-TV that the residence of the actor’s neighbor had ignited, but Van Dyke’s property remained unharmed. Barbra Streisand, another well-known Malibu resident, had her publicist state to the New York Times that her evacuation status was uncertain.
