Old Firm violence that occurred before Sunday’s Scottish League Cup final in Glasgow was “completely unacceptable,” according to the first minister. John Swinney criticized the actions of a “minority of fans” who ran along Argyle Street in the city center, igniting flares near individuals engaged in Christmas shopping. A Police Scotland officer sustained injuries after projectiles were thrown. Additionally, a 26-year-old man required hospitalization following a severe assault. Celtic defeated Rangers in a penalty shootout held at Hampden Park. Swinney commented: “The clubs have got to address the behaviour of a minority of their fans whose conduct was just completely and utterly unacceptable. “It caused fear and distress and alarm to people who were enjoying Christmas shopping in advance of the football game.” Online videos depicted frightened shoppers seeking refuge inside shop entrances. Surveillance camera footage from Gallagher’s Bar on Howard Street captured a masked individual being struck in the face while attempting to enter the establishment frequented by Celtic supporters. Shortly thereafter, a flare was propelled through the pub’s entrance as supporters rushed along the street outside. The first minister stated that law enforcement had the general situation “entirely under control,” but emphasized that the public should not have been exposed to such events. He further remarked: “The clubs have got a responsibility to make sure that their fans behave properly.” He also noted: “The overwhelming majority of the football fans happily went to the match, watched the football and took part in the game.” Swinney additionally condemned the “alarming” deployment of pyrotechnics during the game at Hampden Park, leading to the apprehension of two individuals. A 41-year-old individual faced charges for a drug offence, while a 30-year-old man was discovered to be in possession of a pyrotechnic device. As of now, no arrests have been carried out in connection with the street disturbance. Police Scotland Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan stated: “Our inquiries are ongoing to identify those who were involved and we will take appropriate action against them. “I urge anyone who has any information that could assist our investigation to contact us.”I want to make it clear that the use of weapons and violence will not be tolerated and retrospective inquiries are being carried out.” Footage disseminated online displayed frightened shoppers concealing themselves within shop entrances, and another video depicted windows being shattered at a pub occupied by Celtic supporters. Chief Superintendent Dolan further commented: “We are following a number of lines of investigation, including reviewing CCTV and footage on social media.”I would like to thank the majority of fans for their conduct throughout the day.” Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, expressed that it was “particularly concerning” that disturbances persist in connection with Old Firm games. She remarked: “I wrote to both Celtic and Rangers after similar incidents that took place around Hampden last year and they did nothing.”The football industry seems to be quite happy to make money off these thugs while decent folk have to live with the consequences. “That’s not good enough.” A representative for the SPFL, the Scottish Professional Football League, stated that officials have made it clear that deploying pyrotechnics is “illegal and unsafe.” They also noted: “The disruptive displays which took place before and during Sunday’s match were completely unacceptable and again led to a delay to the start of the match.” The SPFL indicated its intention to coordinate with Police Scotland and incorporate Sunday’s game into its continuing inquiries regarding the use of pyrotechnics. The football organization also mentioned it would review additional issues, such as the “unacceptable encroachment” of supporters onto the Hampden Park trackside during the game. The contest proceeded to extra time and penalties following a 3-3 draw, with Celtic ultimately triumphing by winning the penalty shoot-out 5-4.
