While many children spend their Friday evenings on schoolwork or digital devices, 10-year-old Efan has a different engagement. At just ten years old, the young DJ is scheduled to open for the renowned rave legend and barrister Judge Jules, who will be performing at the 600-capacity Neuadd Ogwen in Bethesda, Gwynedd. This event marks Efan’s most significant performance to date, operating under his stage name, Efan Electro. Although nervous, the Ysgol Llanllechid pupil eagerly anticipates getting behind the decks. Efan recounted the beginning of his DJing journey, stating, “I got into it all when I was about eight years old.” He further explained, “My mum and dad had shown me all this 90s music like Fatboy Slim and Faithless.” Witnessing others perform inspired him: “I’d seen some people on stage and playing online and I thought ‘that looks really cool and I’d like to give that a go’.” This led to a specific Christmas request: “So for Christmas I asked for some decks.” Efan, who resides in Bethesda, expressed that DJing provides him with a “happy feeling,” elaborating, “I just forget everything when I’m actually on the dance floor.” He draws inspiration from observing other DJs, with American producer Marshmello being among those whose work he admires. He articulated his motivation, saying: “I just wanted to recreate that feeling for me when I’m on the decks and then to see everyone else in the crowd happy and dancing – it feels amazing.” Efan has also performed at school discos. He stated, “I’ve DJed at a school concert – they gave me one of my first opportunities,” and added, “My friends are amazing and they think it’s really fun.” Gwenan Davies Jones, the head teacher at Ysgol Llanllechid, noted that Efan has demonstrated a passion for music since childhood. She remarked, “Music flows through his veins and as he’s become older he’s become a very talented DJ – he’s only 10 years old but we’re very lucky as a school,” and further commented, “He’s always happy to go on stage with all his gear and all the pupils are so happy to move and dance to all of his songs.” Efan envisions himself continuing to DJ until the age of 60. He shared his aspirations, stating: “I have big dreams for big festivals, Tomorrowland and Glastonbury.” He also revealed a specific goal: “And one of the ones on my list was to warm up for Judge Jules.” With the upcoming performance, he concluded, “I can tick that off the list now.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
