Cricketer Moeen Ali, a World Cup winner, was granted an honorary degree by Coventry University. The all-rounder, currently with Warwickshire following an extensive period at rival Worcestershire, was presented with the accolade during a ceremony held at Coventry Cathedral on Monday. The university stated that the distinction was “in recognition of his outstanding contribution” to cricket. Moeen expressed that sharing the occasion with fellow students was “special.” The Birmingham-born former England captain represented his nation in 68 tests, 138 One Day Internationals, and 92 Twenty20 matches. Following the reception of the award, the 37-year-old declared he was “honoured.” Moeen conveyed his aspiration that he had motivated individuals to engage in the sport. He remarked, “To inspire them and give them confidence to do what they want to do. It’s a big part of my journey.” He further added, “I just tried to do the best I could but now that I’ve finished playing for England, I look and sit back and when people come up to me and say my kid plays or I play because you played and the way you played – that really for me is true success in the sport really.” Moeen identified his most memorable individual achievement during his international tenure as securing a hat-trick to clinch a test victory against South Africa at The Oval in 2017. He stated, “It’s special to have a day with the students who you know have worked hard and studied hard and put in the work and got rewarded today.” He concluded by saying, “To be part of that and to share the day with them is amazing and I’m thrilled that Coventry University awarded me with this amazing honour.”
