A print depicting Banksy’s renowned artwork, “Girl with Balloon,” was sold at auction, fetching over £80,000. This initial proof print of the celebrated mural, which originated in London in 2002, achieved a sale price double its anticipated value during a Los Angeles, US, auction. The sale event additionally featured several of Banksy’s initial creations, including an original painting of his well-known “Hooded Figure,” which realized £60,496. Darren Julien, who is the co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions, stated that the assortment provides ” unprecedented look at the history and path” of Banksy. These items, dating from 2004, were made available to the public through Julien’s Auctions, originating from the personal collection of Steve Lazarides, the artist’s long-standing agent and photographer. A unique hand-cut stencil bearing Banksy’s name achieved £44,984, and an authentic pair of Puma “Turf War” sneakers previously worn by the Bristol-based artist were also purchased. Additionally, a collection of sketches by the elusive artist, presented on manilla and showcasing concept designs for his Paparazzi Rat stencil, sold for £40,336. The auction further featured 15 burner phones that Lazarides utilized to communicate with Banksy. Mr Julien commented: “This astonishing collection assembled and lovingly kept for over 25 years by his closest associate and partner, Steve Lazarides, offers an unprecedented look at the history and path of the man that would become the world’s most famous and visionary artist named Banksy.“This auction featuring many of Banksy’s earliest works, most recognizable pieces and personal effects is a historic opportunity for the next caretaker to own the most comprehensive and definitive archive of Banksy’s legacy.” In the preceding month, another print of Girl With Balloon was taken from Grove Gallery in London, subsequently being retrieved by law enforcement. Lazarides stated: “Banksy, myself, and a couple of others set up a company called Pictures On Walls and like we really wanted to make cheap affordable art for the masses,” “For a very short moment in time, we made a difference, we made it OK for ordinary people to like art… It’s by far the proudest thing I’ve done. And by far the most powerful thing I think he’s done.” For updates, follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X, and Instagram. Story suggestions can be sent via email or WhatsApp at 0800 313 4630.
