Councillor Steve Mitchell, a Lincolnshire mayor, expressed that it was “very heartbreaking” to witness the town’s Christmas tree being vandalized. The 25ft (8m) tree, situated in the market place of Wainfleet All Saints, had its lights removed and discarded on the ground merely a day after its installation. Mayor Mitchell indicated his belief that the damage was linked to an attempted theft, and the matter has been reported to the police. This act of vandalism occurred only days after a Remembrance Day display, consisting of knitted poppies, was torn from the town’s war memorial and subsequently discovered abandoned in a local park. “It is disheartening and I just feel for everybody who contributes,” Mitchell stated. He added, “It doesn’t just affect one or two people in the town, it affects everybody.” Volunteers had dedicated Friday night to decorating the tree, only to be compelled to return on Sunday morning to undertake repairs once the damage came to light. The mayor confirmed that the town council is reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to identify those responsible. “We’ll carry on doing our best,” he affirmed. “We’ll try and put aside the few bad apples that are in the town and we will carry on striving to keep our town how we like it.”
