Brian Thompson, a chief executive in the US healthcare insurance sector, was fatally shot in Manhattan. His widow stated that he had been subjected to threats concerning medical “coverage”. Paulette Thompson informed NBC, “There had been some threats,” adding, “Basically, I don’t know, a lack of [medical] coverage? I don’t know details.” She further noted, “I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.” On 4 December, Mr. Thompson was shot in the back by a masked individual while entering a hotel where his company was conducting an investors’ meeting. Five days subsequent to the incident, law enforcement officials apprehended Luigi Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania and charged him with Mr. Thompson’s murder. Investigators reported that the 26-year-old possessed a handwritten document articulating “ill will” directed at corporate America. Concurrently, a private funeral service for Mr. Thompson took place at a Lutheran church situated near his former residence in Maple Grove, Minnesota. A statement released by his family the previous week conveyed: “We are shattered to hear about the senseless killing of our beloved Brian.” It continued, “Brian was an incredibly loving, generous, talented man who truly lived life to the fullest and touched so many lives.” The statement also mentioned that he was “an incredibly loving father” to his two sons. The Wall Street Journal reported that Mr. Thompson and his spouse, Paulette, were residing separately at the time of his demise. UnitedHealth Group expressed that it was “deeply saddened and shocked” by his passing. In a statement, the company affirmed, “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him.” Mr. Thompson assumed the role of chief executive at UnitedHealthcare, which is the largest private insurer in the US, in April 2021. His compensation last year amounted to $10.2m (£8m). He commenced his employment with the company in 2004, progressing through various positions. Prior to his tenure at UnitedHealthcare, Mr. Thompson served as a manager at the prominent accountancy firm PwC for several years, as indicated by his LinkedIn profile. His LinkedIn account further states that he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Iowa in 1997. Mr. Thompson was subject to allegations of insider trading. A class-action lawsuit initiated in May 2024 claimed that he divested $15m of his UnitedHealth Group shares, allegedly with knowledge that the company was reportedly under an antitrust investigation by the US Department of Justice. The City of Hollywood Firefighters’ Pension Fund filed a complaint against Mr. Thompson and other executives, asserting that they neglected to inform investors about the investigation prior to selling over $117m in company stock.
