Whitehaven captain James Newton will assume a coaching position with the club as he undergoes rehabilitation for a neck fracture sustained in a match on 29 September. The fractured neck injury was incurred by Newton during Haven’s final match of the season, which was played against the Halifax Panthers. As his recovery progresses, he is scheduled to serve as an assistant coach alongside Anthony Murray for the Cumbrian club’s season in League 1, following relegation. Newton expressed his views on X, stating, “It’s a great chance for me to gain some coaching experience which is the path I want to progress down after my playing career.” He further added, “My ultimate goal is to return to play and I will leave no stone unturned in that process.” Following the incident on 29 September, Newton underwent emergency surgery and has since been required to wear a halo brace to safeguard his neck. The 32-year-old hooker has been a player for Whitehaven for over 11 seasons.
