Former Brazil international Adriano, who earned 48 caps for his country and retired in 2016, became emotional during a testimonial match at his inaugural club, Flamengo. The moment of emotion occurred when an artificial intelligence-generated message from his late father was broadcast. The 42-year-old former Inter Milan forward, who concluded his professional football career eight years prior, was honored with this match, held at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, to provide him with an official farewell. Notable Brazilian football figures, including Romario, Ze Roberto, and Dida, participated in the fixture, which pitted ‘Flamengo Legends’ against ‘Friends of Italy’. Adriano, who represented Brazil 48 times, contributed goals for both sides in the match, which saw Flamengo Legends secure a 4-3 victory. His son, Adrianinho, initiated the scoring and played alongside his father during the second half. Following the halftime interval, the game was paused to allow the message from Adriano’s father, who passed away in 2004, to be broadcast to the spectators. Artificial intelligence technology replicated the voice of Adriano’s father, delivering a message that expressed wishes for his son’s happiness following his retirement. Adriano responded by kissing the Flamengo emblem and completing a circuit of the field before the match recommenced. Speaking to SporTV, Adriano stated, “It’s a shame he couldn’t be here, but I know he’s happy with everything I learned from him.” He further commented, “For me the most important thing is the affection my friends have for me. “It’s not so much because I’m a player, it’s the affection and love that everyone has for me. It’s in my heart and I’m very happy.” Adriano was once considered among the globe’s most formidable strikers, with predictions suggesting he would achieve legendary status for Brazil. He transferred from Flamengo to Inter in 2001, where he secured four Serie A championships and two Italian Cups with the Italian team. Renowned for his potent left foot, Adriano was part of Brazil’s Copa America-winning squad in 2004. Nevertheless, his professional trajectory significantly declined after his father’s passing later the same year. Despite this, he maintained a starting position for Brazil during the 2006 World Cup, but his performance subsequently deteriorated due to struggles with weight and alcohol. He departed Inter in 2009, subsequently playing for Sao Paulo, Roma, Corinthians, and his formative club Flamengo, prior to concluding his career with Miami United in 2016. Since his retirement, Adriano has openly discussed his experiences with depression and alcoholism throughout his playing career. In November, Adriano shared with the Players’ Tribune, “Do you know what it’s like to be a ‘hope’? I know it.” He continued, “The biggest waste in football: me. I like that word ‘waste’. I don’t do drugs, as they try to make people believe, I am not a criminal but, of course, I could have been. I drink every day.”
