Luke Williams expressed his belief that Swansea City demonstrated their capability to contend for a position in the top half of the Championship standings, notwithstanding their loss to Leeds United. The match concluded with Swansea suffering a narrow defeat in a dramatic contest, as Wilfried Gnonto’s goal in stoppage time secured a 4-3 victory for Leeds in south Wales. Swansea had established a lead on two occasions during the game, initially with an early goal from Harry Darling, followed by Liam Cullen’s strike just prior to half-time. Leeds subsequently reversed the scoreline to take a 3-2 advantage, before Florian Bianchini’s goal in the 90th minute seemingly salvaged a point for Swansea; however, Italy international Gnonto ultimately scored the decisive goal, propelling the Whites to the top of the table. Swansea boss Williams stated, “I am pleased with almost all of the game in terms of performance, but the result is really difficult to accept.” He added, “The performance certainly doesn’t look like anything less than a team that’s top half at least.” Williams further commented, “I certainly don’t feel like we looked miles apart from Leeds, that we should be 14th and Leeds top.” Notably, Leeds marked the first occasion this season that a team has scored more than one goal against Swansea, a side previously recognized for its defensive resilience. In the 2024-25 season, the Swans have incurred seven defeats across 16 Championship fixtures; however, they have yet to lose any game by a margin exceeding one goal. Williams expressed the view that Swansea has demonstrated improved competitiveness against the league’s leading teams this season compared to the previous campaign, but emphasized that his squad needs to secure more points against teams lower in the standings. He stated, “We have to win games we are clearly capable of winning and games where we are by far the best team.” Williams concluded, “I don’t think this is the game where I can say we should have won, absolutely not. But there have been plenty where I have felt we have done more than enough to win and we haven’t done that.”
